Christine Mills, MA, CMC, started a career as a television marketing producer in 1981, but when her mother started showing signs of Alzheimer’s disease in 1998 at the age of 62, her goal was to learn as much as she could about the disease so she could help her mom and her family through the next 20 years. She decided to start a new career in the healthcare field, earning her masters degree in Gerontology/Human Development from Saint Joseph College in West Hartford, CT.
Through the years, Christine and her family watched as the devastating and debilitating effects of Alzheimer’s took hold, but they also had to endure the overwhelming and often confusing process of financial and legal planning, home care, adult day care, inpatient psychiatric care, medication education, nursing home placement, and finally, hospice care in July, 2015.
During the years when her mom was sick, Christine volunteered at the Alzheimer’s Resource Center of CT and the CT chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, and then worked as a professional Care Manager for Connecticut Community Care, Inc. (CCCI) for more than 7 1/2 years. She helped hundreds of older adults and disabled individuals remain or return to the community under the Connecticut Home Care Program and Money Follows the Person. She has also worked as a certified medical assistant for various offices in Central and southwest Connecticut and is currently a hospice volunteer with Masonicare in Wallingford.
She has assisted others in her family through the aging process and strongly believes in protecting and empowering all older adults and their right to self determination, dignity and independence.
